I didn't purchase my '87 9000T until it had 151k miles on it. I've put similar (actually probably more) money into it, and that does not count my non-required upgrades, but, over a period fo six years, not three. And, it now has 278k miles on it, so I would certainly expect more things to have needed replacement.

I obviously cannot speak from direct experience, but it's been my impression that folks here on this board don't have that many repairs at such a low mileage. I could be wrong, maybe they just aren't reporting them.. there are certainly cases of major repairs early on, but I at least would like to think they are the exception, rather than the norm.

All that said, it seems you must be paying full dealer list price for parts, given the quoted repair cost for various items. It certainly pays to go to an independent shop who doesn't gouge you on parts prices, although unfortunately, this won't decrease the frequency of repairs.

I'd tend to agree that you would be better off helping your son get a Japanese vehicle for college. Saabs in his price range are going to have a lot of miles on them, and for that reason alone I feel it would be prudent to find something newer. Even when the 9000s don't break often, when they do break, it can be very expensive.

There is of course the safety factor, 9000s being among the safest cars on the road, airbags or not. All driving is a risk though, so drive what you can afford to drive and drive safely, regardless. Looking back now, I am sure glad I had a Honda when I was going to college, as I certainly could not have afforded, nor had time for, all the repairs that have gone into my Saab, at that time.
