What strikes me is not the repairs you have had done, but the cost of the repairs. Rotors, pads and one caliper for $1,100? Window switches $235? Exhaust pipe $314? AC compressor, condensor and lines $1600? Crank pulley, tensioner pulleys and belt $800? A new expansion valve $668? This is sounding like one of those mastercard commercials. "For car repairs there is mastercard, forever after, there is poverty."
Your car could be a lemon. I bought a 91T with 110k in 1998. Before last winter, the only major expenses had been an air conditioning nightmare, a blower motor, 2 cv joints and an S-belt. I also had front brakes and a rear muffler. This winter, I went through it myself and replaced things that were not really broken, but might brake, like the balance chain and water pump, and broken things like shocks/struts, suspension bushings, etc. I have also done the accumulator spring. Which, incidently, was $35 for a kit and took all of an hour. I also had governor seals replaced and a timing chain rolled in. In 4 years, I might have spent $4,000 +/-, and more than half of that was on air conditioning.
I have a 93cs non-turbo that I bought in 97 w/77k. As I recall, that car needed no work for the first 2 years. I mean none. I can't recall one thing that broke or was fixed. And I was watching. Since then, I have done the brakes (pads and rotors only), battery, alternator, starter motor, exhaust, timing chain (roll-in $350), replaced all the dash bulbs and a cracked instrument cluster, S-belt twice, windshield washer resevoir. The driver's seat heater never worked and I never got around to fixing it. The blower motor resistor melted yesterday and the ac compressor is getting weak. So far, I have invested maybe $2,000-$3,000 in 5 years.
I have done about half of the work on these cars myself. The other half I paid to have done. Neither has left me stranded. Which I would not take well to (I hear you about the wife).
The point is not how wonderful my cars have been (actually, they can both be quite frustrating), but that I have not had anything like your experience with 2 older 9000's in a longer period of time. I think a big part of your problem is how you are going about addressing problems. I get the distinct sense that your dealer is looking at you like the wolf looked at little red riding hood.
