To a certain point I think you should disregard his estimate of repair.
Why? because the TCS system is such a sensitive system that needs ALL components to work in harmony with each other. If one component starts to go bad it can throw all kinds of codes left and right. And a seasoned mechanic knows that to begin with and more or less disregards the faultcodes the first time.
He writes down and resets all faultcodes, look the system over for obvious problems like broken/old hoses and the wrong colored checkvalve (white/black) should be red/white. Measure the resistance of bleeder valve and replace if out of range. Check and adjust the kickdownwire.
After that he takes it for a testdrive to warm up the car, comes back to the shop, read off any new faultcodes both in the TCS system and ABS system ( if fault code exist in ABS you can't calibrate the TCS system ). If none, does a calibration of the TCS system using the Tech2 or older ISAT scanner and take it for another testdrive.
If everything works out ok and no faltcodes are logged, he ask the customer if he should keep looking for more problems or if the customer wants to drive the car for awhile to see if this repair took care of the problem.
This should take about 2-3 hours of shoptime.
If any faultcodes shows up again and the car goes into limphome, at least he have a clean slate to start to work from, since the small stuff is taken care off. And he can start looking into the bigger picture which is throttlebody, pedalsensor, ECU and lastly kickdown motor.
And certainly don't forget to look for corroded pins in engine harness connections and ground connections.
Hope this helps.
