Recurrent serpentine belt problem

For the fourth time in two years, the serpentine belt has failed, this time leaving my wife to limp home about 20 km.
The first time, the belt had thrown off, but was intact, fortunately just as I approached home, and I refitted the old belt (with the help of the clear instructions on Quasi's excellent site).
A few months later, it shredded at the end of a short motorway run, and I got home and replaced the belt.
Last December, I was on a motorway when it happened again, so I got a tow to the nearest Saab workshop, and they replaced both pulleys as well.
Then today it happened just after starting the engine.
After reading other posts on the subject, I have come to the conclusion that the tensioner should also be replaced, as it appears to be unable to cope with the varying demand.
I can't find any instructions about how to do this - does anyone have any tips, or should it be straightforward even for an infrequent dabbler like me?
Also, is there anything I should check to ensure my wife's trip has not damaged anything by overheating?
There was water around the belt area, but that was probably from the coolant reservoir.
The engine oil does not appear to be contaminated.
The battery is now on charge - it was so low that all the instruments were dead.
