As you let off the gas, if you push or pull on the shifter as appropriate, it will pop right out. I've used that practice in normal driving for years, as it makes for smooth, natural shifts when using the clutch. You "preshift" as you lift throttle just a bit, then clutch and go without letting the RPMs drop appreciably. Matching the speeds on upshifts is tough with a Saab because the synchros aren't real strong, but you can shift even an unsynchronized transmission without a clutch if you match the engine speed to the gear speed precisely enough. So it doesn't have to grind a lot, or even much at all. With patience and sensitivity at the crucial times, a 500 mmile Interstate trip shouldn't be any problem.
