Wheel bearing grease, rear shock replacement

Yesterday, I thought I'd have a nice 2 hr project of replacing the rear shocks with Koni Sports. Well, since the lower bolts were frozen to the shock eyes and the swaybar bushes, this turned into an 8 hr nightmare. I had to lower the whole axle to get the springs out of the way and cut the shock/sway bar bolts out bit by bit with a pneumatic grinder. Then I improvised new sway bar bush steel parts fro a pari of 1/2 sockets.
From the drivers side I took the brake back plate and the hub out. I noticed that the bearing grease was very hard, like solid. Is this normal or should the bearings be repacked at some interval? I took some of the stuff out and replaced with new grease. The bearing itself was fine, no signs of wear.
Regards,
Tapani
