...my duct tape loving friend. :)

I just found this in the archives, and wanted to ask you if this could be a problem like the one I've tried to describe wherein I remove the external nut in hopes of pulling out the old antenna mast and cable (from the top), but I cannot, because there is a piece which remains "stuck" in that hole which will not come up.

THe piece to which I refer is a screw-like thingie (technical term), meaning that it's like a tube with screw-like ridges all around it.

Sigh. I need a good auto part dictionary.

ANyway, here's what I found in the archives:

This happened as well about a year ago on my '91 900S. The antenna motor winds up a nylon rope that's notched on one side for the motor to grab it. After a time, the bottom end can break off, leaving a short piece of this below the wind-up reel in the bottom of the motor, which may or may not make an additional clacking noice as the reel winds past it.

This is easy to fix IF the metal sleeve in the antenna mast housing hasn't welded itself to the housing. Check that when you take the unit out (pull back carpeting in the trunk, disconnect wires, unbolt the whole frame to remove, then take the frame off the motor once it's out - much easier). If the sleeve is welded tight, forget it, you'll never get it back together, order a new assembled mast & motor for ~$85, or just get an $8 flexible 10" external antenna from Radio Shack.

If the sleeve IS loose, you can disassemble the motor housing, unwind the old vinyl cord, clean it out, remove the broken pieces, and replace it with just a new mast (this is about $30 from Europarts).

Whatdya think, :Quasi?

THanks!

Julia
