What you're describing is the notched nylon cord (broken). Can you just pull the old antenna mast out, or is it still attached to the nylon cord? If the mast is still attached, then PULL! H-A-R-D! Get mad! If it won't come out, then it won't come out, and we'll move to the next step.
If the mast is out and the nylon cord thing is still in there, try grabbing it with something - needle nose pliars are about all I can think of - and if you can grasp it, pull it out. If it won't come out, we'll move to the next step.
Is the antenna motor assembly still in tha car?
