The nut screws onto a tube which is part of the antenna motor. The antenna goes up and down into that tube. I agree with KeithR that you are probably seening the silver metal thing that the antenna slips into. If the old one is salvageable, it may be a better fit than the new one that came with the replacement mast. But don't worry about that now.
Cut off the antenna mast. I would use bolt cutters for speed, but a hacksaw or garden shears will probably do it. Remove the carpet to get at the motor. Pull the motor out. Then you can deal with the mast in a more relaxed environment (I am thinking kitchen table here, not bathtub).
I buy rubber surgical gloves from Costco to use when fixing messing things on the car. The inside of that antenna motor is really messy. If you put it on a table, put down newspaper first.
