Whats confusing me is your description of 2 wires running off into the car harness, everyone Iv'e seen (picture included) has just one. Is the broken piece you are describing the black plastic between the pulley and casing, in the picture where the wire comes up out of before it goes under the little clamp? If that is broken and you see a bare broken wire in there, it probably the ground wire, should be connected to the case. A small capacitor looking electronic device molded into the plastic is probably a flash back diode (seem to remember seeing one somewhere) that prevents the clutch from sending a spike back into the car when the clutch is disengaged.
