Our weather is very predictable, with the exception that sometimes the rain is a different temperature from what we expected :)
I know of no-one in the UK who uses winter tyres. I'm sure there are exceptions. We seldom get snow here and on the rare occasions that we do get a serious snowfall, we accept that it's a good excuse to have a day off and the whole country grinds to a halt for a day or two.
I usually drive home to Northern Ireland for Christmas and have been caught out once or twice with snow while coming back down from Scotland. Now I carry snow chains on that journey. It's probably overkill, but it's a long way home from there. I can tell you that Yokohama S1-Zs (AVS in the US?) are pretty crap in snow. They were fairly low on tread, though, when I tried them. On ice, I really don't see how the tyre makes much difference unless it is studded. As I've said, though, I have no experience of winter tyres and wouldn't even know where to buy them if I wanted any.
I used the Bridgestones all last winter and found that their excellent wet grip was most useful. We do get cold spells - 20F (-6C) is pushing it a bit, but still happens. -3C (26F) is not at all uncommon around here (S. England, near London) in winter, and average temperatures do tend to be lower further north.
