I have Dunlop Sport 5000 Asymmetricals (P205/55R16) on my '98. I did a fair amount of research on the tire website(s), and these seemed to offer the best of both worlds: excellent grip in dry, very good in wet/light snow. I read all of the feedbacks from people who also used them and they all rated them the same. They cost me approx. $100 per tire.
I live in Connecticut, close to the water, where the snow is not too heavy, but do get our fair share. I did not have a problem with them last year, though they were brand new and "meaty" then.
Make sure you understand that any tire rated as being "all-season" will NOT perform as good as a true snow tire in heavy/deep snow. A worn-out snow tire will still outperform a brand-new all-season in deep snow: they are designed to do that.
