The price of new cars seems disproportionately high compared to the value of the car as second-hand as soon as it is driven off the forecourt. This situation was even worse a couple of years ago when new 9000s were still available.

While I could afford a new 9-5 (were I inclined to have a 9-5, which I'm not really), a second-hand one (even only a year old) would represent so much better value for money. Another difference between the UK and the US is that the warranty here is conditional on having the vehicle serviced correctly by a franchised dealer (this goes for all manufacturers, as far as I know, not just Saab). This is probably a rip-off for the first owner, but it is great for the second-hand buyer who can find a dealer-serviced car at much less than new price. This, I believe, is one of the reasons why UK Saabs don't appear to have the terrible reputation for reliability that some people here indicate may apply to US Saabs.

As an example, my '96 Aero was bought new by the previous owner for £33000 (almost $50000!). Three years and 112K fully-dealer-serviced miles later, I bought it for £11000 (about £16000). This was Saab dealer price, so I was ripped off a bit. I could probably have found a similar one substantially cheaper elsewhere.

I recently bought a '95 CSE (fully dealer-serviced for all of its 136K miles) for £1700 ($2500), with only a few minor scratches on the paintwork, which I'll be repairing myself for just the cost of some lacquer. New price would probably have been upwards of £25000 ($37000).
