In my car ('91 9000T), I thought my overboost switch was non-existent because I had seen my VDO gauge touch 20psi on more than a few occasions.
Then one day, my friend was driving my car on the highway and I guess he decided to floor it at 55mph, in fifth gear, up a hill (that'll get the 'ol turbo goin'!!!). I wasn't paying attention until suddenly it felt like someone had dropped an anchor and I looked over to see the gauge reading 21-22psi (I guess he kept his foot on the gas)...I can only imagine what it might have been reading before the cutoff occurred...
- and so I'm having flashes of pistons and valves joining together in a glorious molten stew, and I'm like "ummm...yeah...if you could just go ahead and never do that again..."
The point is, I have a pressure switch that works, but only kicks in at some unearthly, piston-melting boost level. So I trust my boost gauge far more than this mysterious item.
I know that my boost gauge is resonably accurate because it seems to correspond to what I would expect for the stock gauge, meaning that the beginning of the solid red is equal to about 13-15psi.
I use a maual boost controller that I designed, and I always have been very satisfied with how it functions, given the fine level of control that it offers. If you're willing to take the risk of neutering the APC, I believe that an MBC would be the cheapest way for you to achieve the boost levels your looking for. From my perspective, the increased response and faster spool up are well worth the risk.
Good Luck!
