Gas Gauge showing empty when full

My son came home today with his 92 9000s and said the gas gauge said it was empty when he has 3/4 in the tank. So the gas gauge was on empty, the gas light was on the arrow on the low fuel EDU was blinking and Error was reading on the EDU. So I took it to the gas station to fill it up (he in 17 any questions). I only put four gallons in it to fill it up. When I got back in and started it everything was showing normal, except the gas gauge, it showed a little over 3/4 full. I asked him later today if it was working OK and his said it did it again, but now it is working fine. Any ideas??? I did a search on gas gauges and it sounds like the connection on the sensors. If so how do I get to this on a hatch back?
