My 88 model does pretty much the same. When it's full or if I've just filled it up, it sometimes will read as though it's almost empty even though I've only driven about 200 miles or so. It doesn't always do this though, but most of the time it does. I knew it was something wrong whe although it showed to be emty I could still drive another 200 miles befroe the light actually came on. It's the sending unit I think you after. I know what it does and where it located but, I haven't bother to fix mine just yet as the part cost about $100 even though it could simply be a loose wire or bad connection although I doubt it. It's located under that wooden floor that sits in front of the area where the spare tire is located, or the floor piece just behind the rear seats, same thing. You'd have to take out that complete forward section to ge tto it. Once removed though you will have acces to where these things live. The gas level sensor as I like to call it sticks down into the top of the tank and there it reads the level. I believe it's a cylinder type object with a float inside of it. Haven't seen one first hand though, only pictures of it. Either way you can check to see if there's a bad connection there, but more than likely the float inside is the problem.. I pretty much think though that if I were to go into that amount of trouble to remove the floor I'd just go ahead and replace the thing while I was in there. Simply because if it's a bad connection, and I fix that, it'll probably come back sooner or later and I'd be doing more work all over again. That I don't like, but I don't like spending money on stuff either. So I just use my tripometer and when it reaches 350 miles I refuel my car.
