Actually, lower octane fuel has more energy in it..

And should in theory, give you better mileage. However, I wasn't under the impression that the differences should be dramatic, or even very significant. As for performance, if 89 is giving your car full boost without detonation, then there would be no benefit to going with 93. If you car is completely stock, and doesn't ping or cut back boost frequently when using 89 octane, forget the 93!

I found that when my car was completely stock but getting on in years, it's appetite for higher octane grew, such that it would ping quite a bit with 87 (never did that when I bought it), and slightly with 89, so I went to 92. Now that it has a much younger engine and is in tip top shape, I feel that if I returned the boost to stock levels, I could probably go with 87 again.

Less money spent on gas could mean more money saved for the repair fund.. :)
