The AID is quite good, albeit expensive. Timing mods are a great way to improve low end torque without changing boost (possibly even reducing it). If you just want more low end oomph, you could leave boost and fuel where they are at and get the AID.
I haven't tried a manual boost controller yet, though I have been tempted many times due to the finicky nature of the APC system in my car. It's running smooth now though, so I will maintain the knock protection as long as that is the case. Plus, adding a MBC would be yet another bit of work. Easy, sure, but I'm sick of adding stuff/working on the car, and I hate tweaking. Well maybe not hate, but not my favorite thing. I'm more plug and play...
