I had a shop do a complete rebuild on my '88 9KT autobox. It self-destructed on the test drive, and had to be towed back. Now, I could put this down to a bunch of ham-fisted mechanics, but they've done great work on other ZF boxes in the past (and since).
I have a theory about the ZF autobox. If it goes together *just perfect* at the factory, I'll last forever. The Majority don't go together perfectly, and so our 80K or so lifetime. At the other end of the curve are the 'short fuse' boxes.
Hey, people make mistakes. And there may have been a manufacturing defect in one of the new parts. That's why things have warranties. Things do break.
The next time I get a rebuld, I'll get it from Eriksson. I believe that they do a dyno test on boxes before they go out.
