Before we give the autobox a bad name...

I do want to say that, overall, the 9K ZF auto is a very good transmission. All automatic cars will have their fare share of horror stories and manufacturer recalls, so why should Saab be any different?
One thing to note here is that before I bumped my baby to a beast (Stage 3 ECU, 3" exhaust, K&N air filter, poly suspension parts, etc.), I checked with the Saab Performance division (through a trusted Saab service manager), asking if the auto would be able to handle the extra horsepower and torque, and they said definitely yes. They said that they modify stock Saabs all the time (for research and testing) to much higher limits than what I was looking to do, and the ZF was always able to handle it. They were also surprised to hear that the ZF was getting such a bum rap since it is (and has become) a very reliable and good transmission.
One other thing to mention here is that the Saab service manager said he has had more manual transmissions come in for heavy-duty service (more than just fluid and clutch changes) than auto's for the 9K (and more auto 9k's are sold than manual ones...).
