And soon (January?) we're going to tackle oil! The Delco UPF line of filters is far and away the best, but unfortunately (as NINES readers knew months ago) they have been discontinued, and it has not been on the shelves at Pep Boys for over a year. The second best filter is the "Pure One", Purolator's premium filter, this according to Declo's internal filter test documentation.

For 9000 and C900 cars I prefer to use the larger PF13 size, but unfortunately it will not fit the NG900/9-3/9-5, and the 9-3 SS uses a cartridge type, not a spin-on.

The Saab Brand filter is indeed made by Delco, but it is made in England and has completely different internal construction, with much more filtering area than the US made counterparts. The PF-13 and PF-53 filters at K-mart, AutoZone, and other sources *used to be* the English made filter, but some two years ago Delco switched to distributing only US made filters here. WalMart *always* had only the US filter on their shelves - go figure. You can compare internal construction at the Saab Club web site (see below). Again, NINES readers were alerted of the change in plenty of time to "stock up.

"MANN" filters are far and away the finest mechanical design oil filters, but the actual filtering medium is questionable. I have seen reviews where fairly large particle sizes (40 microns) have whistled on through. by comparison, the Delco Gold traps 98% of 10 micron particles, and most other filters trap 98% of 25 micron particles - this on a single pass. Whether this has been corrected, or whether the test report I saw was a fluke, I don't know. But I'd feel better with a known quantity, which at this time is the Pure One. And whenever Saab *gives me* a filter, I'll use it!

As for oil, the choice isn't so much which brand, but what type (synthetic, conventional), what viscosity range, and what specification to insist on (API SJ, SL, ACEA A1, A3, ILSAC GF3, "Starburst?"). Those are the questions we will be addressing. Stay tuned.
