I think the 86 sensor does not have a fan. SAAB was briliant and ran a hose to the heater blower to assure air flow. I'm not positive about this, but the sensor is probably the same.
I broke the damper shaft accidently doing the heater core & motor replacment many years ago. Then had to remove it & glue it (5 minute epoxy and fiber glass cloth) You might check this area by uncliping the damper shaft on the blower housing and moving the damper shaft it's full range of moting by hand with the blower running. Does the temp change linearly from hot to cold? If it does then it is climate control related (ACC, sensor or servo)
I too miss my 86 - It got T-Boned by a Ford Exploder in flight. I was able to drive it home - just not worth repairing. (It is out to pasture at the SAAB Depot)
