That whining noise you're hearing might be the pump cavitating. Not sure how this varies from one year to the next, but you can read here about a lot of problems people have with the oil pickup strainer getting clogged with muck that results from too-infrequent oil changes.
You might want to drain the oil, and try to peer in thru the drain-plug hole and see if there seems to be a lot of crud in the oil pan. If you have any suspicion, I'd drop the pan and take a look. I think there are also 1 or more o-rings on the oil pickup tube that could fail and cause the pump to suck air.
Another possibility, although I consider it less likely since you're hearing a noise, is that the pressure-relief valve is stuck open. This one you can check without removing the timing cover.
And you're right in worrying about the timing chain and gears. It's possible you've got two problems: a clogged oil pickup, and chain/gear trouble that's making the noise.
