The oil pump pickup tube was totally clogged. What a PIA that pan is to get off! Love those little bolts hidden in the bellhousing. And the way a socket won't fit between the pan and the driveshaft tube, and you have to hold the socket on the bolt, thread the extension thru, and then snap it together for those back bolts...
Anyways. The gook looked like it had washed down and made a nice cone underneath the pickup screen. The screen was totally packed. It's all just crusty, crumbly dried oil gack. No metal shavings, at least.
I agree that this doesn't look good for the overall maintenance/mileage of this engine- but hell, it's in there now, and I'm gonna run it. Well, if I can get the pan back on.
BTW, the oil pump looks great, hasn't swallowed any teeth. And no teeth in the pan.
So. Next chance for wrenching is Sunday, hopefully I'll get it back together then.
