In a perfect world you have both manifolds off the car and can lift head straight up, clearing the timing chain guides.

Trying to keep as many parts left in the car, like intake manifold and turbo unit, means that you have to do a lifting/twisting motion of the head to clear the 4 studs on turbo flange and at the same time clearing the T-guide.

The exhaust manifold have to come off anyway in a later sequence because I never put the manifold back without changing the 4 long studs. For the last two years I have used the same shorter studs as in the middle of manifold.

So by loosening the manifold to head, you give it a little bit more wriggling room when lifting the head/exhaustmanifold off the 4 turbo studs.
