If the blower motor doesn't spin (no air from ducts), it could be a bad motor or a bad motor controller. The controller is easy to replace (usually) - not so easy for the motor, especially in the '80s models. Can you do it yourself? Yes. It is hard, and if you haven't done much work on a car other than change the oil, I'd say leave it to a pro. With decent tools and much swearing, it can be done on a '87 in an afternoon.
The motor in one of my cars is starting to squeek, but I'm leaving it until it fails.
As to no heat, if the heater arm is broken, the flap will fall to one side or another - that's usually to hot air in the summer, and cold air in winter (Murphy's 3rd law of car heaters). Again, if the arm is broken in a reasonable place, the $8 fit is pretty nice. I have also fixed arms broken right at the base with a decent glob of epoxy. It only worked for a year or so, but a year's not bad. But troubleshoot the problem. No heat can be for many reasons - the wire fell off the flap arm; if you have ACC, the servo is bad, or the arm fell off the servo, or the driver to the servo is bad.
Can you adjust the heat at all? Have you run Self Test on the ACC (assuming you've got ACC)? Have you inspected the shaft arm? A little poking around may save you a very large amount of $$ - don't always assume the worst.
