There is a small gap there when the engine is cold. There is a lot of moisture in the exhaust, and when things are cold, the moisture condenses in the exhaust, and is driven out of the gaps by the exhaust pressure - hence, bubbles. When things warm up and expand, the gaps close. As the exhaust system warms up, the point of condensation moves away from the engine.
You'll notice a real exhaust gasket leak by a loud exhaust, and if sever, backfiring when you let off the gas.
