Art,
Let me suggest a slightly different approach. Listening for particular things in the store is not likely to work too well for you. With all speakers, but subwoofers particularly, there's a lot of interaction between the speaker and its environment that significantly affects the sound. Factors like the speaker's placement and what's in the trunk can also have a big impact. Never mind tricks that the store may use like tweaking equalizer settings or tone controls, or enabling not-so-easy-to-see "bass boost" features on the head unit.
My suggestion? Check out the store's return policy. Try to select a good unit, but make sure you have the ability to return it if it doesn't sound right. It may take a couple of tries to find a unit that sounds the way you want.
