The car is a '91 9000 CD Turbo.

It starts and runs fine. However, it will die unexpectedly. It has died while driving along, but the problem occurs most often when coming to a quick stop. It will shudder and sometimes die. Usually it will start right back up, but other times it won't until after some time has passed.

At first I thought maybe it was just in need of some routine maintenance. So, I changed the following items, but the problem persists.

1. Fuel filter
2. Air filter
3. Spark plugs
4. Battery
5. Battery connections
6. Some vacuum hoses
7. Tightened loose radiator hose
8. Changed oil
9. Checked all other fluid levels

I know some of these things probably would not solve the problem, but they needed to be done anyway.

I posted this problem a few weeks ago and someone told me it was most likely a bad hooter valve. This person said that dying upon rapid descelleration was a classic symptom of a bad hooter valve.

I don't know for sure what a hooter valve is. I searched for hooter valves on this board, and compared to the drawings in the Saab parts manual. It seems as though the manual calls it a solenoid valve,
part # 74 85 576.

I called the Saab parts shop here in town to check on price and availability for the solenoid valve. I gave him the part number 74 85 576 from the manual I bought at his shop. He then tells me there is no listing for that part number. So I tell him that I was advised to change the hooter valve. Then he tells me that hooter valve is a common name for a boost pressure control valve, which has the part # 74 85 576 and a price tag of $243. This part number is the exact part number I gave him. He seems very reluctant to help me and his best advice is to bring it in and let them fix it at $76 an hour. He also said that his mechanic is not buying the hooter valve diagnosis. It seems to me, they are just tring to rake up business.

So now I am only more confused. I've got three possible names for the same part. Hooter valve, Solenoid valve, Boost pressure control valve. If indeed these are all the same part, is there a way to test the hooter valve? By blowing air though it and checking for resistance, or checking for certain readings on a vacuum guage? I just don't wan't to spend $243 on a part that may not be bad, or may not even be a hooter valve.

I apologize for the long post, and appreciate any help. Thanks
