Either the gears themselves or the bushings. Could also be the driver splines and/or bearings. If it were the ring and pinion, I would expect considerable whining during normal road speeds. If you can't find anything external, you might want to jack up the car so that both front wheels are off the ground. Then start the car, put it first into first gear and then into reverse gear and try to stop one wheel and then the other independently to see if the slack shows up. Warning: This "diagnosic" can be dangerous if the car is not on solid jackstands or a frame support lift and the engine is much above idle.
