But that's why I threw it out there - to see what others might surmise. That was exactly the first thought that came to my mind. However, I can't see how it could behave normally most of the time and only get conniptive occasionally. I too have thought about splines and bearings ... I can't see splines breaking and causing such a thing. Bearings would make noise first. I can't see how the pinion gears could pop out of alignment enough to do it, but at times it has exhibited the sort of violent action that something like that would produce. I'm trying to convince myself that it's a CV joint, but that feels like a reach too.
