Quasi, you'll recall our recent email discussions about my CVJ nightmare last year. I originally purchased a complete rebuilt axle assembly including both CVJ's, and the first unit received was too short. The indy feared that although it did barely fit by less than one-half inch at minimum length, that it might do just what Kyle is suggesting. The second rebuilt unit was too long, prompting me to punt and buy a new CVJ from the dealer, which fit since the original axle and inner CVJ were retained.
You might ask the PO, if you can still contact him, if the axles were ever replaced with rebuilt units. This sounds very credible to me, and changing the CVJ as you are now planning may not fix the problem because the axles are not the correct length.
