Sorry, I have been away for a while, but I'd like to continue our open discussion on the abilities, and drawbacks of the new 9-3; if you don't mind.
As for the skidpad test... I found the suspension to be extremely soft and sloppy. My nissan frontier has a stiffer suspension! (I know it's a truck, and should have a much stiffer suspension, it was just an overdramatic example, please endulge me.) It felt as if the rear of the car came around the corner a second or so later. I feel that they made this a compromise car, and did a little too much compromising in the luxury ride area. I also have no real problems with the engine performance, as this was the base 9-3, it was the lack of throttle response that I was disappointed with. There was a very noticable time delay from when I floored the pedal to when the car responded. This is not the kind of response you want in an emergency situation. Granted the customers that this car is geared toward will probably not be doing what I did to it, but being a SAAB I expected a little better behavior out of the throttle. As far as the suv's in the ditch...GOOD that's where most of them belong! The people driving 75mph in a raging snow storm because they have awd/4wd and a $50,000 SUV obviously have no common sense and belong off the side of the road. But as for road feel?..I drove the 03 mercedes suv... What a piece of crap!! I think the Ford exploder is a much better handling machine, but still I had no sense of what the wheels were doing on the pavement, I had to rely on my other senses to compensate fo the gross behavior of this obviously top heavy vehicle.
I realize that SAAB is trying to get into a much broader market with the 9-3, but at what cost? I just hope the Vector overcomes the shortcommings of the base 9-3.
