that is the question. I recently went about installing another plug insert in my '87 9000 Turbo and went to install the head this morning. After getting everything together and making sure the cams and crank were aligned, rotating the engine 2-3 times, I started it up. Prior to all this the engine was running fine with the exception of it blowing past the loose spark plug, the reason for the insert. Now it appears the head gasket is no good or there is something else going on. I had a high idle and lots of white exhaust, so much so that I created my own fog bank.
I've replaced the head gasket twice before on this car and am certain I torqued it correctly and that everything else is on correctly as well. While I had the head off I looked at the pistons and they were covered with hard carbon buildup after only about 20,000 miles since I did a valve job on this car. I'm not sure what to make of that at this time.
I am thinking of simply replacing the head, I can get a reconditioned one for $350, and replacing all the seals and probably the rod & main brgs. as well and basically starting with a fresh engine. Any thoughts? I'm thinking about cost here verses getting another car which we don't have money for right now.
