Even being 2/1000th's of an inch off from flatness can influence your seal. I had sent my head to Swedish Dynamics, and they proclaimed it flat so didn't resurface it. After installation, I got the white cloud. Removed head, took it to a local shop, and they showed me with feeler gauges that it was out of flat. They sent me to someone else to get it resurfaced, since they were too busy. My low spot was below cyl3 and cyl4 - hard to get a good seal there anyway.
Hard to know what to do. New engine after all those miles wouldn't be a bad choice, though.
