Here's the Havana-cab spec Saab engine rebuild if you're determined.
First make sure your cylinder walls have not been scored. You may need to find some used pistons (or file off the rough spots on the crown if they're not too bad -- be very watchful of the sides and use new rings). Assuming your C900 is a 16 valve, the head will fit, but you'll have to install the coolant hose from the thermostat side of your 2.3 head to the back side of the intake manifold, where there's a plug you remove and install the hose nipple there.
The 2.0 head matches up bolt-hole-wise to the 2.3 block, but you must swap cam gears (and cams -- let's not forget that!!) as they are deeper on the newer engine. If your cam gears look at all chewed up, I'd go with new ones.
After that, it's standard rehabbing of the timing components as described at length in previously referred posts and websites. I would take a good hard look at the inside facing of your timing cover, in the vicinity of the oil pickup passage. There's usually some heavy damage in this area from the chain self-destructing, and you want to make sure there isn't a hole worn through which could aerate the oil pump and cause pressure problems. On the oil pressure note, make sure to install a new oil pressure switch on the backside of the block. And thoroughly clean out the oil pan/pickup screen/pickup tube; get any and all aluminum shavings outta there before sucking them up through the oil pump when you start it up.
If you go this route, when you've got this all together, it'll run fine and you may only notice a small decrease in power. But in all likelihood you won't notice a difference. How do I know? Because I just finished exactly this operation, 2.0 head and all. I can't vouch for longevity compared to high-class rebuilds or "regime change" but I don't sense the engine cares much in my case.
Take your time, and Good luck!
