Wet looking carbon buildup on #1 cylinder. Cause?

I'm looking into the rough running at low rpm's of my '87 9000 Turbo. I recently replaced the head with a 2.3L head from a '91 that was reconditioned and after pulling the plugs this morning I saw that cylinder 1 was wet looking, oily I guess, while #'s 2,3, & 4 were dry. Also the plugs were just slightly discolored on those cylinders, actually almost white like a lean mixture, while #1 was more tan. # 1 plug definitely does not appear as though it is getting a rich mixture in any way. I have also noticed when starting that it will turn over at one point in the cycle as though there is a cylinder with low compression. I have not gotten to a compression check yet, will do that this afternoon, but wanted to get some input. I've spoken with the place I got the head from and they've assured me it was leak checked previously and I'm certain that changing the exhaust cams wouldn't cause a valve not to seat. Any input would be appreciated.
One last thought. I have read on the board here that the oil pan can be removed with the engine in place, yet I am at a loss as to how this can be. I've looked several times at mine and it does not seem possible, or very easy at a minimum, since it has the lower mounts attached to it. Recommendations in case I'm looking at replacing rings?
