My guess is that the serp belt broke (which drives the power steering pump, among other accessories, and would explain the difficulty in steering). It could have happened because the belt tensioner pulley eventually wore out and might have broken off, got caught in the path of the serp belt spinning, and caused the smoke (melting serp belt and/or pulley, which is nylon).
The engine should shut down by itself if ever an excessive over-heating condition occurred (as in complete loss of coolant). My guess, again, is that it's not as bad as you think.
No comment on the women issue, since my wife definitely knows that if she ever encountered an engine condition, she would shut down the vehicle (given that she is in a safe area), and call me with details. I know plenty of guys who have driven their cars when they shouldn't have, and caused more damage in doing so.
