The Aero site will have a lot of info for you:
http://webpages.charter.net/ralimi/aero/
There aren't major differences between the years you listed.
The 10% HP difference is noticeable, but not overwhelmingly so.
Like most of the parts on a Saab engine, reliability is purely subjective and coincidental at the same time. The automatic trans is not the kiss of death, there have just been more problems than not associated with the traction control from the auto trans.
Again, you will never find a 8-10yr old car that is perfect. Parts wear over time. Performance cars tend to be driven like performance cars.
Have a qualified Saab technician perform a pre-purchase inspection.
Few cars can offer the bundle of performance, comfort, luxury, safety, and space that the Saab (more specifically the 900 Aero) offer. You will find one or two of these things in another brand, but you will always have a compromise.
