1) You will DEFINITELY have and feel more hp/torque from swapping out the exhaust (stock is 2.25") to a 3". Any larger than that will not fit well since the 3" is already a tight fit at the turbo end. Your options here are replacing just the downpipe and cat (with a 3" free-flow cat) and replacing the complete exhaust. Your gains only come from doing the dp/cat--the rest adds minimal, if any, peformance gains. People are 50/50 on replacing just the dp/cat and the complete system.

Expect about 10 to 12 more hp by doing this upgrade.

Since you are allowing the turbo to breathe easier by upgrading the exhaust, you should also swap out the air delivery system with a high-flow filter such as K&N to allow more incoming air into the turbo area. It's been stated that modifying or getting rid of the airbox results in no extra power, and could lead to water getting into the intake area, so just upgrading the filter is enough.

2) As in anything you do above and beyond what a manufacturer has done (or might even recommend against doing), it's like playing Russian Roulette. In the case of the exhaust/air delivery upgrade, it's actually a benefit to the engine. It allows the turbo to run cooler since the exhaust is escaping faster.

Since you have an auto (as I do also), there are precautions that MUST be heeded:

-Do NOT perform any "jackrabbit" starts (even though the urge is high to do it)
-Be careful on the 1 to 2 shift (actually, let the tranny get out of 1st as fast as it can, and use 2nd as your starting power point)
-NEVER downshift (manually or "kick-down") from 4th to 3rd at speeds higher than 85mph (which would make the tach jump to the 5000+ range causing the torque converter to jump up to an incredible speed to try to catch up to the high-spinning engine)
-Try to manually shift the tranny when driving it hard, limiting your use of the "kick-down" feature (better to be at a lesser position on the gas pedal when downshifting from 4th to 3rd than to push the pedal all the way down)
-CHANGE THE FLUID EVERY 10K to 12K MILES (NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE!!!!!)

I have no clue what the condition of your tranny is, the history, or the mileage on it, so use all of this as a guide only. Some auto's last a very long time (even driven hard), while others break at a young age--it's just the luck of the draw.

3) Cost depends upon where you get the parts, what route you decide to go, and what upgrades you would like to do. There are many suppliers (sponsors and non-sponsors of this bb) of performance exhausts and cats. I used Engstrom.net (sponsor) which happened to have been the cheapest at the time, and of which most people here have bought their JT 3" exhaust systems from. It is not stainless steel, but rather aluminized steel to minimize rust-through. You can price out just doing the dp and cat as opposed to the full system and note the difference.

Once you start with the exhaust (which, BTW, is the right way to start, along with the better air delivery system), the bug WILL bite you, and you will venture on to other upgrades (ECU, brakes, BPV, tires, suspension bushings, etc.).

I hope this, along with what TKC posted earlier, helps.

Also: Could you post the color bands on your front and rear springs, as well as the stcok numbers on your struts? I am trying to keep a log of this info, and since you have an auto Aero, it would help me out tremendously. Thanks!
