I just recently started to experience this w/my '97 CS, but only occassionally. I thought perhaps I was just being absent minded and taking shifting for granted after all these years of driving a manual. I saw another post about some (rubber?) piece that might go bad that keeps the shifter going into exactly the correct position. Anyway, I really try to focus now on ensuring I pull the shifter all the way to the left as I drop it into 2d, and it goes in fine.
Am hoping someone w/greater insight will answer your post and help both of us solve this mystery. Bruce
