Sounds like he quoted you backwards. It's the slave that's difficult. The transmission MUST be removed to change it. The master is no more involved than changing a brake master cylinder - - just a little harder to get too. If the car pulls OK and doesn't slip, the clutch itself is OK. Difficulty getting in gear is generally a release problem - - the master, the slave, or the line between the two. But if it's ANY of those, you should be feeling a distinct weakness in the pedal. If the pedal feels normal; it's probably not the clutch.

One other thing. Mine is weak many mornings (I probably need to change the fluid) and reverse gives me the most problem. No synchronizer for that gear only. It will grind if the pedal isn't firmly to the floor. If yours goes into reverse easily but not into the forward gears; I would suspect the transmission.

Now regarding whether or not to keep the car. You've got very low mileage if it's accurate. The 2.0 Liter engine is actually the most durable Saab built from what I've read on this board. No timing chain issues and more tolerant of overheating than the 2.3 on both counts. Saab's turbos tend to be long-lived also from what I've heard. Thought the same applied to their straight shift transmissions. I've got two cars (one for parts) that both have good transmissions at over 250 K miles. I suppose it depends on what the transmission will cost you (assuming you need one). The car isn't worth over a grand in all likelihood which is bad news if you spend $2 K fixing it and someone totals it for you. Keep receipts. You can at least demand a comparable replacement vehicle in lieu of cash in such an instance. Other's comments may be more valuable than mine as I do all my own work and wouldn't go anywhere NEAR a Saab were that not the case. Mechanics are afraid of these cars for reasons that mystify me. They're no more difficult to work on than most other cars and actually easier in a few areas like front wheel bearings and CV boots. Good luck.
