I owned a 99 and C900T, and found the 9000 an immediate better drive. Maintenence is more expensive in general but there is less so it comes out in the wash. Ari's advise is, as always, good.
I would never buy one of these cars without a thorough inspection by a good Saab mechanic. A poorly maintained one, or one that has been hit can be very expensive. Also gives you some bargaining power. At least you will know what the car needs.
I had an '87 9K, and currently own 2 '95s, a CSE and Aero. Both of the latter cars are very peppy and good handling. Not sure if the Aero is a HUGE improvement on the CSE, but it is noticably better in corners and a bit more punch in accel.. Did find that the insurance was about $300/yr more with my company, which I find crazy.
I would look at '95-98. I think there are improvements to the manual tranny, and most of the bugs were worked out by the time these models came out.
The CS is a 'stripped down' light pressure turbo version of the hatch. It is a bargain compared to the CSE and Aero, and may have had an easier life since it is the least sporty version. It still puts out 170hp vs 200hp and 225, and is a very well outfitted car. You can save $2-4K on this model. See if you can take them all for a drive to see what suits you.
