How to test O2 sensor with a AA-battery?

I went to my local Saab dealer this morning, and the service mgr told me the way they check for faulty O2 sensor circuits is to use a 1.5v AA-battery, along with a voltmeter.

I didn't quite understand the way to hook it all up, but somewhow I am supposed to connect the positive end of the battery to the main wiring harness end of the O2 sensor connector, disconnect the huge wiring connector going into the ECU and attach a jumper wire to the O2 sensor pin that will then be attached to the negative end of the battery. This is supposed to supply 1.5v to the wiring (ECU will be out of the picture at this point).

My questions are:

Where do I introduce the voltmeter into this scenario?

Does anyone know what the pin # is at the ECU connector for the primary O2 sensor feed (black wire of the 4 coming out of the sensor)?

He stated that if the volts are getting through, then I probably have a faulty ECU, but to speak to him before replacing it (I guess he might have something else to check for?). Otherwise, there is a problem within the wiring, and he thinks the wiring passes through a bulkhead in the firewall before going to the ECU which might be the culprit.
