Replacing the water pump is really pretty easy. It's about an hour's work if everything goes well and you have the right tools.
I'm not sure what the books and such say, but I always remove the air conditioner and set it aside. No need to break the refrigerant lines. Be careful re-installing the air conditioner as the bolts are threaded into aluminum. 15 foot pounds max.
I also remove the inner fender well, as it allows easy access to a couple of the lower water pump bolts.
Finally, it helps to have a really long extension, about 12-18 inches, for removing the 12mm banjo fitting on the water pump. Thread the extension in from under the turbo.
As far as o-rings, I've only ever had trouble with the larger o-rings that are fitted on the short adapter plug. The troubles I've had seem to be sporadic. I'll change a couple of water pumps with no troubles and then have one where I pinch a couple before I get it right.
As far as gasket sealer, I'm fond of Permatex Hi-Tac.
Other's on this site swear by Bars-Leak. I've never used it in my Saabs, but I've had great luck with it in some big American V8s.
Good Luck
