I know the timing chain is probably overdue. Issues are: Full timing chain R&R is $1800 on Townshend's repair list. Parts are about $1000. All indications are that the 180k miles are primarily highway and the oil has been changed regularly. So I'm guessing the chain is not too bad, but maybe getting a little worn and sloppy. This car also has an automatic transmission.
On a 10 year old car with 180k this tranny will probably go before the timing chain will, so putting $1800 into the timing chain is probably not such a wise investment. If it's just about to pop, of course, then I have to act on it.
Can I see anything worthwhile to evaluate the timing chain by pulling the valve cover (while maybe replacing the pad, mentioned in the other posting)? Maybe measure slack or tension in the chain, check roller wear, etc?
