I also have a '95 Aero, it's still on its original DI at 88K miles. There seem to be some correlation to lack of spark plug maintenance with DI failure but there can be other reasons as well, such as heat and failure of electronics part.
I would suggest you change spark plugs often, say instead of Saab's 35K interval, I would cut that to about half, say every 10-12K miles or so. Some would suggest at every other oil change interval. Spark plugs are relatively cheap, even at dealer price of about $12-15 for four. If you are somewhat handy, you may do that yourself, there is a good spark plug wrench included in the tool box. Get some die-electric grease at an auto store, a spark plug gauge, maybe a better Torx wrench and you are set.
The DI is a replacement part, yes, it is also expensive ($300+ at dealer price). I had a '92 9000S, its DI went at about 67K miles but I have been neglecting it, especially the spark plugs. When the DI failed, the symtoms were similar to yours, engine running rough etc...
I suspect your DI had been malfunctioning for a while and that probably caused the catalytic converter hole as well due to unburned fuel.
