Sickly Sweet smell inside the car and 1st gear

Greetings and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.
I just purchased a 91 Saab 9000s about 2 days ago. It is a dream to drive. I've own a couple of 900s in the past but I love the 9000.
The only problem(s) I am having with the car is the following:
1) In first gear, if I am starting out on a hill, it will on occasion (if I step on the gas too fast) drop back into neutral. There is a lot of rattle in the stick shift itself when it moves from 1st to neutral. I do not have any other issues with the transmission.
2) In the interior of the car I will get a sickly sweet smell (I am almost positive it is antifreeze) from time to time. It is intermittent and I can usually minimize it by turning on the AC and Air Recirculation buttons at the same time. I think this might be a problem with the recirc vent but I am not sure how to check if this the problem or not.
Any ideas, guys and gals, on what these problems are and how I might fix them?
Again, thanks in advance for everyone's help.
