Congrats on finding a '91. I have that same car and enjoy driving it every day. Regarding the shifting out of 1st, this is most likely engine and/or tranny mounts. Try revving the engine while watching how much it rocks in its mounts. One person can do this by moving the throttle at the throttle body. Mounts can be had cheaply from eeuroparts.com, and you would need to do both the front and back lower engine mounts, as well as the upper dogbone. Buy a new dogbone with rubber mount already installed, to spare yourself having to press out the old mount. Get a poly mount for the front of the dogbone. Your tranny mount is probably shot. I know mine is. I got a poly mount for this from eeuroparts.com; just have to put it in one of these days.
The heater core on the '91 is easier than an '88, as there is more room behind the intake manifold. I probably could have done the '91 without unbolting the throttle body.
