The smell is antifreeze and it most likely means your heater core is going or gone. You need to replace it ASAP or you won't defrost or heat. Probably you should have the blower motor replaced while they are in there. It could go at a later time and is a PITA to replace. It's easier while doing the heater core. Depending on the shop you use's labor, it should be around $500-$600 for the job. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Good luck. There's always the possibility it's not the HC....
